Allah Is The Curer

As Muslims, it is very important to have the correct belief in Allah. He is the One who cures us when we are sick. It is also from the Sunnah to seek and take the remedy. So we do not fall into two common errors.

The first is not to take the remedy when we know it can help cure us by the will of Allah.The second is that we believe that only the remedy or medicine will cure us. Here, we would fall into a major sin because it is Allah who is the Curer and if He wills we are cured and if He wills we are not. We should believe that only Allah is the Curer otherwise we may fall into shirk (associating partners with Allah).

Therefore, we seek and take the remedy and put out trust in Allah by asking Him to cure us and believing that only He is the Curer.

The Messenger  r would say:

"وَاشْفِ أَنْتَ الشّافِي لا شِفَاءَ إلا شِفَاؤُك".

".And cure us for You are the Curer, there is no cure but Your cure"

  [Saheeh Al-Bukhaaree and Saheeh Muslim].

‘Abdulrahman as-Sa’di (may Allah have mercy on him) likewise shows that we should not rely too much on medicine as though it is the only remedy that can cure us. Rather Allah has made a cure in other aspects that we may not even realise. For example, the story of Yusuf’s u father who was given a piece of clothing from Yusuf u. When Yusuf’s u father smelt his son’s fragrance, he regained his eyesight and he was cured. The fragrance of Yusuf was a cure for his father’s eyesight. Allah was able to cure Yusuf’s u father without a reason but Allah is All-Wise. Similar to this is the story of Ayub u whereby no medication or doctors were able to cure his skin condition. Allah ordered him to hit the ground hard with his foot such that pure water would gush out. Allah then ordered him to drink from it and have a bath from that water. So Allah removed the harm internally and externally from him and Ayub u was cured. Therefore, Allah cures His servants by either clear, apparent reasons such as medication or by other not so apparent reasons that even the human intellect cannot comprehend.

Allah said:

 { وإن يمسسك الله بضر فلا كاشف له إلا هو }

And When Allah wills that you are inflicted with harm there is no one to remove it but him.

[Soorah al-An’aam:17]

[Taken from Bahjatu Quloob al-Abraar by Sheikh 'Abdulrahman As-Sa'di (may Allah have mercy upon him) p.24 summarised].

 The Quran

The Qur'an Is A Cure

Allah said that his Prophet Ibrahim u said,

  {وَالَّذِي هُوَ يُطْعِمُنِي وَيَسْقِينِ وَإِذَا مَرِضْتُ فَهُوَ يَشْفِينِ}

And He feeds me and quenches my thirst and when I fall sick then He (Allah) cures me.

[Soorah Shu'araa: 80]

Some scholars of Tafseer explain that there is a relation between what we eat and drink and falling sick since most people fall ill because of their diet. This could be a reason why Allah mentioned that Ibrahim u recognised that Allah is the One who provides sustenance for us but that sickness is due to our own self and this is why sickness is mentioned after food and drink in this verse.

{وَنُنَزِّلُ مِنَ الْقُرْآَنِ مَا هُوَ شِفَاءٌ وَرَحْمَةٌ لِلْمُؤْمِنِين}

And We sent down of the Qur'an that which is a healing and a mercy to those who believe.

[Soorah Israa: 82]

A healing to 'those who believe' showing the importance of rectifying our belief and actions such that we are true believers if we want the Qur'an to benefit us.

Ayub u called upon his Lord,

{وَأَيُّوبَ إِذْ نَادَى رَبَّهُ أَنِّي مَسَّنِيَ الضُّرُّ وَأَنْتَ أَرْحَمُ الرَّاحِمِينَ}

And remember Ayub when he cried to his Lord: Verily, distress has seized me, and You are the Most Merciful of all those who show mercy.

[Soorah al-Anbiyaa: 83]

This was when he was inflicted with harm. And the reply came from his Lord:

{فَاسْتَجَبْنَا لَهُ فَكَشَفْنَا مَا بِهِ مِنْ ضُر}ٍّ

We answered him and removed the distress that was on him…

[Soorah al-Anbiyaa: 84]

  {يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ قَدْ جَاءَتْكُمْ مَوْعِظَةٌ مِنْ رَبِّكُمْ وَشِفَاءٌ لِمَا فِي الصُّدُورِ وَهُدًى وَرَحْمَةٌ لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ}

O mankind! There has come to you a good advice from your Lord (Quran) enjoining all that is good and forbidding all that is evil, and a healing for that which is in your breasts, a guidance and a mercy for the believers.

[Soorah Yunus: 57]

This shows us that the Qur'an has four benefits:

1.  A good advice.

2.  A Cure for our hearts from all diseases.

3.  A Guidance.

4.  A Mercy for mankind.

{قُلْ هُوَ لِلَّذِينَ آَمَنُوا هُدًى وَشِفَاءٌ}

Say: it (the Qur'an) is a healing for those who believe, a guide and healing…

[Soorah Fusilaat: 44]

The Messenger r said,

"There is no-one who is afflicted by distress and grief, and says:

 ‘Allaahumma inni ‘abduka ibn ‘abdika ibn amatika naasiyati bi yadika, maadhi fi hukmika, ‘adlun fiy qadaa’ika. As’aluka bi kulli ismin huwa laka sammayta bihi nafsaka aw anzaltahu fi kitaabika aw ‘allamtahu ahadan min khalqika aw ista’tharta bihi fi ‘ilm il-ghayb ‘indaka an taj’al al-Qur’aana rabee’ qalbi wa noor sadri wa jalaa’ huzni wa dhihaab hammi.

(O Allaah, I am Your slave, son of Your male and female slaves, my forelock is in Your hand, Your command over me is forever executed and Your decree over me is just. I ask You by every name belonging to You which You have named Yourself with, or revealed in Your Book, or You taught to any of Your creation, or You have preserved in the knowledge of the Unseen with You, that You make the Qur’an the harvest of my heart and the light of my chest, and a departure for my sorrow and a release for my anxiety),’

but Allah will take away his distress and grief, and replace it with joy.” He was asked: “O Messenger of Allah, should we learn this?” He said: “Of course; everyone who hears it should learn it.”

{وَإِنْ يَمْسَسْكَ اللَّهُ بِضُرٍّ فَلَا كَاشِفَ لَهُ إِلَّا هُوَ وَإِنْ يُرِدْكَ بِخَيْرٍ فَلَا رَادَّ لِفَضْلِهِ يُصِيبُ بِهِ مَنْ يَشَاءُ مِنْ عِبَادِهِ وَهُوَ الْغَفُورُ الرَّحِيمُ}

And if Allah tests you with affliction, there is none who can remove it but He…

[Soorah Yunus: 107]

{وَيَنْصُرْكُمْ عَلَيْهِمْ وَيَشْفِ صُدُورَ قَوْمٍ مُؤْمِنِين}

And He will give you victory over them and heal the breasts of a believing people.

[Soorah Tawbah: 14]

When You Sleep Read Ayatul Kursi [Soorah al-Baqarah:255]

hen You

Abu Hurairah t reported that the Messenger r said, "When you are about to sleep recite Ayatul Kursi till the end of the Verse for there will remain for you a protection from Allah and no devil will draw to you until morning." [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree].

{اللَّهُ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ الْحَيُّ الْقَيُّومُ لَا تَأْخُذُهُ سِنَةٌ وَلَا نَوْمٌ لَهُ مَا فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَمَا فِي الْأَرْضِ مَنْ ذَا الَّذِي يَشْفَعُ عِنْدَهُ إِلَّا بِإِذْنِهِ يَعْلَمُ مَا بَيْنَ أَيْدِيهِمْ وَمَا خَلْفَهُمْ وَلَا يُحِيطُونَ بِشَيْءٍ مِنْ عِلْمِهِ إِلَّا بِمَا شَاءَ وَسِعَ كُرْسِيُّهُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ وَلَا يَئُودُهُ حِفْظُهُمَا وَهُوَ الْعَلِيُّ الْعَظِيمُ}

Allah! La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He), the Ever Living, the One Who sustains and protects all that exists. Neither slumber, nor sleep overtake Him. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on earth. Who is he that can intercede with Him except with His Permission? He knows what happens to them (His creatures) in this world, and what will happen to them in the Hereafter. And they will never compass anything of His Knowledge except that which He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and He feels no fatigue in guarding and preserving them. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.

[Soorah al-Baqarah:255]

The Last Two Verses Of Soorah Al-Baqarah [Soorah al-Baqarah:285, 286]

The Messenger r also said, "whoever recites the last two Verses of Soorah al-Baqara at night, those two Verses shall be sufficient for him." [Saheeh al-Bukhaarree and Saheeh Muslim].

{آَمَنَ الرَّسُولُ بِمَا أُنْزِلَ إِلَيْهِ مِنْ رَبِّهِ وَالْمُؤْمِنُونَ كُلٌّ آَمَنَ بِاللَّهِ وَمَلَائِكَتِهِ وَكُتُبِهِ وَرُسُلِهِ لَا نُفَرِّقُ بَيْنَ أَحَدٍ مِنْ رُسُلِهِ وَقَالُوا سَمِعْنَا وَأَطَعْنَا غُفْرَانَكَ رَبَّنَا وَإِلَيْكَ الْمَصِيرُ (285) لَا يُكَلِّفُ اللَّهُ نَفْسًا إِلَّا وُسْعَهَا لَهَا مَا كَسَبَتْ وَعَلَيْهَا مَا اكْتَسَبَتْ رَبَّنَا لَا تُؤَاخِذْنَا إِنْ نَسِينَا أَوْ أَخْطَأْنَا رَبَّنَا وَلَا تَحْمِلْ عَلَيْنَا إِصْرًا كَمَا حَمَلْتَهُ عَلَى الَّذِينَ مِنْ قَبْلِنَا رَبَّنَا وَلَا تُحَمِّلْنَا مَا لَا طَاقَةَ لَنَا بِهِ وَاعْفُ عَنَّا وَاغْفِرْ لَنَا وَارْحَمْنَا أَنْتَ مَوْلَانَا فَانْصُرْنَا عَلَى الْقَوْمِ الْكَافِرِينَ (286)}

The Messenger believes in what has been sent down to him from his Lord and (so do) the believers. Each one believes in Allah, His Angels, His Books, and His Messengers. They say, "We make no distinction between one another of His Messengers" - and they say, "We hear, and we obey. (We seek) Your Forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the return (of all)."

Allah burdens not a person beyond his scope. He gets reward for that (good) which he has earned, and he is punished for that (evil) which he has earned. "Our Lord! Punish us not if we forget or fall into error, our Lord! Lay not on us a burden like that which You did lay on those before us (Jews and Christians); our Lord! Put not on us a burden greater than we have strength to bear. Pardon us and grant us Forgiveness. Have mercy on us. You are our Protector and give us victory over the disbelieving people."

[Soorah al-Baqarah:285, 286]

The Last Three Chapters Of The Qur'an

[Soorah al-Ikhlaas, Soorah al-Falaq and Soorah An-Naas]

When retiring to his bed every night, the Messenger r would hold his palms together, blow into them, recite the last three chapters of the Qur'an and then wipe his entire body as much as possible with his hands, beginning with the head and face and then all parts of the body. He would do this three times. [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree and Muslim].

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

{قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ (1) اللَّهُ الصَّمَدُ (2) لَمْ يَلِدْ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ (3) وَلَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ كُفُوًا أَحَدٌ (4)}

1. Say (O Muhammad): "He is Allah, (the) One. 2. "Allah-us-Samad (The Self-Sufficient Master, Whom all creatures need, He neither eats nor drinks). 3. "He begets not, nor was He begotten; 4. "And there is none co-equal or comparable unto Him."

[Soorah al-Ikhlaas]

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

{قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ الْفَلَقِ (1) مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ (2) وَمِنْ شَرِّ غَاسِقٍ إِذَا وَقَبَ (3) وَمِنْ شَرِّ النَّفَّاثَاتِ فِي الْعُقَدِ (4) وَمِنْ شَرِّ حَاسِدٍ إِذَا حَسَدَ (5)}

1.    Say: "I seek refuge with (Allah) the Lord of the daybreak, 2. "From the evil of what He has created; 3. "And from the evil of the darkening (night) as it comes with its darkness; (or the moon as it sets or goes away). 4. "And from the evil of the witchcrafts when they blow in the knots, 5. "And from the evil of the envier when he envies."

[Soorah al-Falaaq]

[Soorah al

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

{قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ النَّاسِ (1) مَلِكِ النَّاسِ (2) إِلَهِ النَّاسِ (3) مِنْ شَرِّ الْوَسْوَاسِ الْخَنَّاسِ (4) الَّذِي يُوَسْوِسُ فِي صُدُورِ النَّاسِ (5) مِنَ الْجِنَّةِ وَالنَّاسِ (6)}

1.    Say: "I seek refuge with (Allah) the Lord of mankind, 2. "The King of mankind, 3. "The Ilah (God) of mankind, 4. "From the evil of the whisperer (devil who whispers evil in the hearts of men) who withdraws (from his whispering in one's heart after one remembers Allah) , 5. "Who whispers in the breasts of mankind, 6. "Of jinns and men."

[Soorah an-Naas]

 Soorah al-Falaq and Soorah An-Naas

Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said, "When someone fell ill from the Prophet's family he did 'nafath' on them (to blow three times over them reciting the two chapters of seeking refuge -Soorah al-Falaq and Soorah An-Naas). When he himself fell ill, the illness which lead to his death… I would (similarly) do 'nafath' on him and would wipe him with his own hands for it was more blessed that my hands." [Saheeh Muslim].

We Turn To Allah In Distress

Allaah said regarding Dhun Nun (Younis u when called upon Allah to remove his distress and Allah replied,

{فَاسْتَجَبْنَا لَهُ وَنَجَّيْنَاهُ مِنَ الْغَمِّ وَكَذَلِكَ نُنْجِي الْمُؤْمِنِين}

We answered his call and delivered him from the distress. And thus We do deliver the believers

[Soorah anbiyaa: 87,88]

We Turn To Allah When People Try To Harm Us

{فَسَتَذْكُرُونَ مَا أَقُولُ لَكُمْ وَأُفَوِّضُ أَمْرِي إِلَى اللَّهِ إِنَّ اللَّهَ بَصِيرٌ بِالْعِبَادِ}

And you will remember what I am telling you, and I leave my affair with Allah, verily Allah is ever watchful over His slaves.

[Soorah Ghaafir:44]

Then Allah said:

{فَوَقَاه ُاللَّهُ سَيِّئَاتِ مَا مَكَرُوا وَحَاقَ بِآَلِ فِرْعَوْنَ سُوءُالْعَذَابِ}

So Allah saved him from the evils that they plotted (against him), while an evil torment encompassed Fir'aun's people

[Soorah Ghaafir:45]

Soorah Faatihah Is A Cure

It is also a cure when read over the sick. They are cured by the permission of Allah because the Messenger r said to Abu Sa'eed al-Khudri t after he (Abu Sa'eed al-Khudri t) read it over a person who had been bitten by a scorpion and was cured, “How did you come to know that it is a cure?” [Agreed upon, Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (2276) with the additional wording, “You have done the right thing.”].

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ (1) الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ (2) الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ (3) مَالِكِ يَوْمِ الدِّينِ (4) إِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ وَإِيَّاكَ نَسْتَعِينُ (5) اهْدِنَا الصِّرَاطَ الْمُسْتَقِيمَ (6) صِرَاطَ الَّذِينَ أَنْعَمْتَ عَلَيْهِمْ غَيْرِ الْمَغْضُوبِ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا الضَّالِّينَ (7)}

1. In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful.  2. All the praises and thanks be to Allah, the Lord of the 'Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists).  3. The Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful.  4. The Only Owner (and the Only Ruling Judge) of the Day of Recompense (i.e. the Day of Resurrection)  5. You (Alone) we worship, and You (Alone) we ask for help (for each and everything). 6. Guide us to the Straight Way. 7. The Way of those on whom You have bestowed Your Grace, not (the way) of those who earned Your Anger (such as the Jews), nor of those who went astray (such as the Christians).

[Soorah Faatihah]

The Messenger r said, "For every disease there is a cure so if the medicine comes upon the disease it cures it by the will of Allah, the Most High." [Saheeh Muslim (2204)].

Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) said, "This gives hope to the patient as well as the doctor since for every disease there is a cure that should be searched for." [Zaad al Ma’aad, 4/17].

Abu Hurairah t reported that the Messenger r said, "Whoever does not thank the people does not thank Allah." [Sunan abi Dawud (2/290), Saheeha (416)].

JazakAllah khair to all the brothers and sisters who have supported and helped us to revive the Sunnah of the Messenger r. May Allah reward them immensely in this life and in the hereafter, ameen.

The Messenger r said, "Whoever revives a Sunnah from my Sunnah and the people practise it, s/he will have the same reward of those who practise it without their reward diminishing…" [Sunan ibn Maajah (209)].

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, Lord of the worlds.
